Only A Week of Daydreaming Remains

posted in: Explorience | 0

I haven’t taken a week off work in just over a year. Since January, I’ve been planning an epic adventure in the Canadian Rockies and pining to leave. I’ve struggled to keep the excitement and anticipation to myself. I’ve been posting about it enough that people (including my wife) keep asking me when I’m actually leaving. [Answer: I’m leaving a week after this post publishes.] So, to avoid overloading Facebook with the photos I’m collecting from other adventurers’ trips, I’ve curated a few of my favorites here. Most of these are probably better than what I’ll be able to capture. So, I’m trying not to set my expectations too high. As you can see below, though, that has been and will be tough.

The concierge says, “Your taxi’s here.”

Does it get more epic than this as a tourist?

I’ll trade this bridge for the ones over the Siene.

Speaking of bridges.

I’m not into bridges for the architecture, but I am impressed with their engineering. That includes these cable bridges.

Even the wider bridges are a bit more adventurous than those on a typical backcountry tour.

This bridge has a lot more planks, but it lets you see hundreds of feet down in between each one.

I don’t drink lattes, let alone with extra foam. This is how foam makes it into my vacations.

I might be a little obsessed with these cable bridges.

When your legs get wobbly, there’s the lazy way across.

The view behind you is as incredible as the climb in front of you.

They tell me it’s quite the workout, but something tells me I’ll be focused on something other than my lungs and my muscles during the climb.

What theses steps lack in width they make up for with a sweet handrail.

Who needs a McDonalds PlayPlace?

Spelunking in Canada looks a lot different than it does here.

Sorry: I can’t get enough of the summit and bridge back to civilization.

I love going where most of the tourists aren’t.

I love going places, where you have to pay attention to where you put your feet but where it’s a challenge to do that because of the scenery.

Time to head back to the hotel.

The views from inside the taxi beat that from most Ubers.

No blackout curtains needed in our guest room windows.

This is the breakfast view from our lodge. No, really.

Not exactly roughing it . . .

Hotel parking can be frustrating. Thankfully, the valet at Bobbie Burns is legit.

And the commutes aren’t bad.

And there aren’t a lot of tourists blocking your shot where you get out of the taxi.

Although, the pickup area has low ceilings.

The lunch area is a great picnic spot, though.

After I leave the CMH folks, I’ll be hiking on foot to this high-altitude hangout.

It’s not on the road, but the driveway is impressive.

And I’ll be finishing out the trip at a couple lakes. You know, no big deal.

I’m hoping to coordinate a sunrise paddle and timelapse here.

Looks like a canoe shouldn’t be too hard to find.

I hope to get some writing done at the top of a couple of the local gondolas, too.
